Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Bookkeeper with a minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience using Xero, along with demonstrated experience managing Australian business accounts.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, performing reconciliations, assisting with Australian taxation and compliance requirements, and delivering timely financial reporting to Australian clients.
This position requires excellent knowledge of Australian bookkeeping practices, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Bookkeeping and Financial Management
Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using Xero.
Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
Perform daily, weekly and monthly bank reconciliations.
Record and reconcile expenses, invoices, payments and receipts.
Maintain general ledger accounts and journal entries.
Manage outstanding invoices, supplier payments and debtor follow-ups.
Support month-end and year-end financial closing processes.
2. Australian Taxation and Compliance
Prepare and reconcile financial information required for Business Activity Statements (BAS).
Assist with Instalment Activity Statements (IAS).
Accurately record and reconcile Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Maintain appropriate records for Australian Taxation Office (ATO) compliance.
Assist with PAYG withholding reconciliations.
Support payroll and superannuation reporting requirements.
Work collaboratively with Australian accountants and registered BAS or tax agents to ensure accurate and timely compliance.
3. Xero Accounting System Management
Manage day-to-day bookkeeping activities within Xero.
Set up and maintain customer, supplier and chart-of-accounts records.
Process and reconcile bank feeds and transactions.
Generate financial reports, including Profit & Loss Statements and Balance Sheets.
Identify and resolve discrepancies within accounting records.
Support Xero data migration, clean-up and account maintenance.
Utilise Xero integrations and automation tools to improve efficiency.
4. Payroll Support
Assist with Australian payroll processing through Xero Payroll.
Maintain employee payroll records and entitlements.
Support Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting.
Assist with leave balances, PAYG withholding and superannuation calculations.
Maintain accurate payroll records in accordance with applicable Australian requirements.
5. Client Communication and Reporting
Communicate professionally with Australian clients regarding bookkeeping matters.
Prepare regular financial reports and account summaries.
Identify financial discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.
Respond promptly to client queries and requests.
Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive financial information.
Manage multiple client accounts while meeting agreed deadlines and service standards.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Requirements
Minimum 4 years of practical bookkeeping experience using Xero.
Demonstrated experience managing accounts for Australian businesses.
Strong understanding of Australian GST, BAS, IAS, PAYG and superannuation requirements.
Proven experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable and bank reconciliations.
Experience preparing financial reports and maintaining general ledgers.
Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
High level of accuracy, organisation and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple client accounts.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
Highly Desirable
Xero Advisor Certification.
Accounting, Finance or Bookkeeping qualification.
Experience working for an Australian accounting firm or bookkeeping practice.
Experience with Australian payroll and Xero Payroll.
Familiarity with Dext, Hubdoc, MYOB or similar accounting platforms.
Experience with Australian construction, trades or professional services businesses.
Previous experience working in a BPO or outsourcing environment.
